The Aussiedoodle is an active, intelligent, and affectionate designer breed created by crossing the Australian Shepherd with the Poodle. Known for their beautiful curly or wavy coats and energetic personalities, Aussiedoodles make exceptional companions for families who love adventure.
Many Aussiedoodles inherit the Australian Shepherd’s natural herding instinct—some even try to “herd” their family members during playtime!
The Aussiedoodle emerged as a designer breed in the early 2000s, created to blend the Australian Shepherd’s agility and sharp mind with the Poodle’s intelligence and hypoallergenic coat. While relatively new, both parent breeds have long, respected histories. The Australian Shepherd became popular in the United States as a hardworking ranch dog, while the Poodle is known worldwide for its brains and versatility. Combining these qualities produced a loyal, smart, and athletic companion now loved by families across the country.
Aussiedoodles are often described as energetic, loyal, affectionate, and extremely intelligent. They thrive on interaction and are happiest when included in family activities. Because they love mental stimulation, puzzle toys, training, and outdoor play are ideal for them. Aussiedoodles are social by nature and get along well with children and other pets. Their temperament is typically bright, enthusiastic, and eager to please.
Aussiedoodles come in a wide variety of colors, including merle, blue merle, red merle, chocolate, black, cream, and bi- or tri-color combinations. Their coats can be wavy or curly, depending on their genetics, and are generally low-shedding. Their expressive eyes—often blue or partially blue in merle dogs—give them a striking, unforgettable look. Routine grooming, including brushing several times a week, helps prevent matting and keeps their coat soft and healthy.
Aussiedoodles require a balanced diet suited to their size and energy levels. Puppies should be fed high-quality puppy food divided into two to three meals per day. As adults, two daily meals work well for most Aussiedoodles. Since they are active dogs, daily exercise is important—walks, playtime, hiking, fetch, or agility activities are great options. Grooming includes brushing several times a week, routine bathing, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and consistent dental care. Their intelligence also means they benefit from regular training and enrichment.
Aussiedoodles typically stand 14 to 25 inches tall and weigh 25 to 70 pounds, depending on whether they are Mini, Medium, or Standard.
The average life expectancy for the Aussiedoodle is 10 to 13 years.
